I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I am currently working on T-Twist from Knitty. A few more inches, and I will be up to the sleeves. It's a whole lotta stockinette, but I'm alternating two different colors (one variegated and oen solid) for a little more interest.

I swatched and then cast on the Lots-of-Choices Top from Sally Melville's The Knit Stitch yesterday. I guessed I'd need a US5 needle with my yarn and, freakily enough, I was right on the first try! Got exact gauge. That almost never happens.

I love the fact that this sleeveless top is just two pieces that button together in front and back. The design's simplicity really appeals to me. The stitch pattern is a breeze, so the knitting goes quickly. And yet it's not boring, either.

I put aside Vest Everest, with it's problems, since it's going to be awhile til I can wear it. I'm almost halfway through Jo Sharp's Singlet, from her newest book, Saturday. I'm using her Soho Summer DK cotton, in a navy blue - it's lovely yarn. I've had to rewrite the pattern a bit - those narrow shoulder straps, set way out at the edges are definitly NOT meant for a bra, or a woman who's given birth to, and nursed four babies! So, I ripped back the front (or back - they're the same) and re-did it. We'll see... I do love the waist shaping on it, though!
Anyone else knitting little summer tanks?

Hey everybody! Anybody still reading this blog now that warm weather is here?

I'm going to start Sally Melville's Lots-of-Choices Top (from the Knit Stitch) later this week. Got some lovely Cascade Pima/Silk on sale at WEBS for it. It's not a vest, but still--it's a sleeveless top.

Anyone want to join me in knitting this or any other summer tank as we wait for fall and the next vest season?

Cable Vest in Wheat

A finished project. Finally. I started this back in January, didn't get but 6 or so inches up the body until this past week, where I put my needles to work. Finished it this morning, blocking as I write.

I used the Cabled Vest from Blue Alvarez Design as the pattern base, proceeded to turn the cable upside down, not intentional though, but just kept with the pattern I had set it as, finishing the arms, neck and the waist band in a K1,P1 rib. The neck is suppose to be a roll-neck, but didn't care for how it was looking, now it's more of a boat-neck look, more finished.

A super easy pattern, but one time was enough, possibly the German Clock Vest next.

So - the back is done, both fronts are done, shoulder seams done, side seams done, armhole ribbing done, buttons purchased.

So what' s the problem, you ask? I have to go to a wedding on Friday and must finish a gift. I have two whole balls of koigu to knit on #4 needles between now and then, plus working, updating my riding club web page, and creating our horse show omnibus.

ARGH! I think a sick day this week might be in order! LOL

I have made a teeny little swatch to play with front bands and buttonholes, so realistically speaking poor hub's Christmas vest won't be finished until April. He is such a sweetie about it though!

I finished up the neck ribbing and bound off my Happy Vest this morning. Then I ran upstairs to the mirror and tried it on. It fits fine! And the length is just right too. I'm on the fence about the narrow shoulders, which I thought I wanted. Maybe slightly wider shoulders would have been better. But I will reserve all judgments until it's blocked and I try it on with my white tailored shirt.

I'm just happy to be done! Pic to come soon.

I'm still alive, fellow vesters, and almost finished with my vest. I've only got the right front left to do, from the neckline decreases up to the shoulder, then the neckline ribbing. I'm tired tonight and think I should stop, as this is the time when I usually make mistakes. I'll take pics with a "high definition" camera (don't have a digital one yet) when it's done and blocked, which should be in the next few days. I'd really love to be wearing it later this week.

Whew! This one was a long haul. Of course I'd have been done sooner if I hadn't interrupted the vest to start a pair of socks and make a petal bib and a purse....

The yarn I used for this vest, I stole from an afghan I hated working on. After I finished the body of the vest, and it was blocking, I took the afghan (still on needles) and the remaining yarn still attached, thought better a smallish blanket than nothing, and knitted as many more rows as I had yarn for. I thought I was sooo damn clever, I was weighing the yarn before & after a few rows so I'd be sure to leave enought to cast off with. As it soaked in the Eucalan, it hit me. I'd left no yarn to knit the armhole/neckline edging! How stupid can one be? Now, I have to decide if a contrasting color could be another 'design feature!' Aargh!

Well, I finally got a new card reader, so here's some pics of Vest Everest:
The 1st is of the comleted back and partially completed front, and the 2nd is a closeup of the armhole. Can you see what I did? The orange & green st markers are on the front armhole edge. On the back, I missed the the 2nd time of binding off 6 sts on each row, so the back armhole isn't deep enough....
I don't even want to think about redoing the back - despite loving the pattern, and the way it's looking, I'm finding the yarn has little give, and it hurts my hand to cable it. Sigh...

Here's the first 7 inches or so of my Happy Vest, which I'm knitting in the round. I put it on two circs a little while ago to check the fit. This time it's just right.

Knitting is about all I will accomplish today. I've got a doozy of a cold. In fact, I'm heading back to bed as soon as I publish this post!

Well - I have been waiting to update until I have something to say! LOL

Anyhow - both fronts are done on the vest and I have cast on the back. The back will have a larger version of the horseshoe cable running down the center, flanked by wicker pattern with a small moss stitch panel as we approach the armpit. I think it's gonna be quite handsome. I need to start thinking about buttons. I think I will do the button bands in seed stitch vs ribbing, but will see how it looks when I try it.

I finished the back of my North Island Vest. Before I cast on the front, though, I am going to do some practice Fair Isle swatches, as this will be my first Fair Isle project. It's turned cold again, after a warm spell, which is motivating me to work on this. We may even get some snow this weekend! (I'm in California, so that's a big deal)

That's what Snoopy used to say to Woodstock. That's how I feel about this vest I'm working on. I've started 3 different versions and frogged too many times to count. I'm getting close to rolling up the yarn one more time and putting it away--again. This time I don't like the cable design. I didn't set them off enough and the center panel of texture is too wide. I'm sick of knitting and knitting with nothing to show for it. I think I ought to take 2 and call you in the morning.

I've been doing swatches for the cable pattern on my vest. I didn't really like how the compound cable I'd originally intended to use looked in this yarn. Too bulky, pulled in too much. It would have worked much better with a DK or sport weight yarn. So I tried other things and ended up choosing this one. All I need to do now is work out the measurements, and then I'll be casting on at the start of the Olympics.

I cast on my second vest yesterday- the North Island Vest from IK Fall 04. I'm using Patons Classic Merino with Leaf Green as the main color. This is the point where the Fair Isle design is supposed to start, but I decided that it really doesn't need the design on the back, anyway. So now I can plug along until the back is finished.

Well - hopefully my computer woes are behind me.

Here's the left front of Hank's vest. Right front is on the needles, ribbing almost complete. This is the dang hardest thing to photograph. It's done in a worsted weight from Alice Starmore that is green, brown, purple, flecked with red, orange, violet, who knows what else. Gorgeous stuff, but I cannot catch it in a photo!

In the meantime, I also finished a sock and added some inches to the baby blanket in progress!

I will be doing a gauge sample--actually a mini version of my vest--soon. I signed up for the Yarn Harlot's 2006 Knitting Olympics and my goal is to make my vest during that challenge, which goes from Feb. 10 to Feb. 26. There's a link on my blog if you're interested.

So hopefully you'll be seeing some actual vest knitting from me soon. It's been inspiring to see the progress the rest of you are making. Sorry to be so pokey--I needed to finish a pair of legwarmers and also have been working on two lace scarves, so I've been a little overextended!

Front & Back - Completed!

Phew! I told myself I was going to finish knitting the front of my Boogie vest this weekend, and I squeaked in under the wire last night. So here are the completed front and back pieces:

Please note: The camera operator was severely compromised by excessive knitting, and apparently was unable to take a clear photo. Pardon the fuzziness.

Now all that's left is the blocking and seaming. And the wearing, of course!

A bit of progress

I'm still using the pattern, but my cable is now a bit different as well as the ribbing. Shouldn't make a difference as the cable sts are the same number, just twisted a bit differently. Now...if I would stop going out to the garden to work and sit a bit to knit I might be farther than the 2 1/2" (total body in the round).

V neck shaping complete. Now need to figure out how to do the shoulder shaping. I want to try short row shaping, but not sure how it will work in pattern. With any luck, will finish that tonight and will take pics of the LEFT FRONT! Sheesh!

I know this is silly since I have to finish this vest, finish a baby blanket and finish some socks, plus I have a toddler sweater in the lineup that I haven't started yet, but I am thinking about the Gatsby vest (Kathy Zimmerman) from IK Summer 03. And/or the Judy Derham's Kuba Cloth vest from LaLana. I have some Rowan Summer Tweed in a beautiful creamy yellow that would be pretty spiff for the Gatsby vest. I tried to find a link to a pic of the Gatsby vest - it's all over cables, V-neck, slightly body skimming- very classy looking.

Ah well - better stop typing and start knitting!

Longer vest

So I've decided I'm going to go the extra repeat of the vest. I can get more.

In case you didn't notice as well, Elann shows you the dyelot when you go to select the yarn color in the pulldown menu of the website. Nice feature! They have plenty of mine left. I'd order it now just to be safe, but the kicker is it's going to cost me $5 shipping for one stinkin' ball. I'd just buy more yarn to justify the shipping, but nothing is grabbing me right now.

So I'm going to knit the back, see how many balls it takes, keep an eye on the stock on Elann and go from there. I'm 7" in, and I'm still on ball #2. I have a feeling I'm going to have enough yarn.

Cabled Vest

Well, I am giving this one a go. I have am currently knitting it up in a "wheat" color, Wool of the Andes yarn from Knitpicks. I have seven skeins, so I should be safe. Solid color is for sure the way.

I also did not like the "garter stitch" bottom and arm edgings. I went with a K1P1 rib, not to deep, about 3/4 inch. Too big of a rib will drive me nuts, I don't want it to "hug" my middle, drape more as I'll wear a longer shirt under it.

Another Veste Everest

I've been working on this pattern using the same yarn as Sherry W, Peruvian Collection Sierra Aran in Cinnamon. The yarn is very soft, but it's also very loosely plied. Couple that with my less-than-stellar tension and I've got some sloppy-looking stitches. I hope I can block some evenness into it!

I hope this KAL will motivate me to work more on it...I've been so discouraged by the appearance of the stitches that it's been tough to get myself to knit on it more. But I really need a nice vest for work so I'd better get crackin'. Everybody else's vests are looking great!

Cabled Vest

I have found this little gem, Cabled Vest, so what do you think? I'm not sure I'm sold on the multicolor, as I have purchased enough Knitpicks for two solid color vests.

Now that my Hourglass Sweater is done, I'm on to my vest. Still not 100% sure this is the one...will have to read, swatch and see what the yarn tells me to do.

Veste Everest Question

I think I'd like to make it longer by 1 repeat, but I didn't buy any extra yarn. I only have about 1000 yrds for the 41" size, a little extra. However, it always seems like i have a ball left over atfer each project....did any of you have extra yarn left?

Almost finished the left front, but decided I needed to rework the V-neck shaping, so have frogged back to the armholes and am starting that all over again. Urgh. Now just need to make sure I write down what I do so that I can repeat it on the other side!

However, I think it's gonna be GORGEOUS! I am very pleased with how it's looking.

Finished the scarf and am working on a baby blanket and socks along with the vest - it might be a little slow!

Pattern Notes: This was really a fun knit. The cable pattern was easy, and the only tricky part was picking up the stitches around the neck and armholes. I am going to block a little more length into it, but other than that I adore the way that it turned out. I will get a lot of use out of it. It adds a nice bit of warmth, without being hot or bulky. I can't wait to get started on my next vest (but I will, since hubby's Christmas sweater still isn't done)

I just finished ripping out a week's worth of knitting. I'd been knitting Vest Everest, in the round, and discovered where I'd messed up the pattern. This means that I knitted by the mistake for many more rounds than I care to admit. I found it on Thursday, but didn't have the heart to start over until today. Sigh...

Hank's vest update

Took a short break to finish my Seaman's scarf (pics on my blog), but picked up Hank's vest again. Finished the armhole shaping on the left front, now headed for the V-neck and shoulder shaping. With any luck, I will finish the left front tonight and can cast on for the right front. This should go much faster, since I won't be re-inventing the wheel at every turn!

Starting tonight! I wasn't planning on casting on right away, but I discovered the yarn for my other project in my queue wasn't going to work out. So here I am, ready to Veste Everest!

I got my yarn from Elann today. The Peruvian tweed is really pretty- I picked the Deep Forest color. It's not scratchy yarn, but a bit less soft then I expected for 20% alpaca. I'm still happy with it for this project though.

In case some of you who are making a vest with cables, you may want to try this technique:

Cables without a cable needle

Veste Everest would be a good project to try this on, IMO.

Once you get the hang of it, it's really so uch faster. I didn't really love cables until I found this method. It works for everything but really slick yarns and very wide or oddly twisting cables or ones with funny decreases.

Yarn for Vest #2

Yesterday, I got my 11 skeins of Patons Classic Wool for vest #2 the North Island Vest from IK(and possibly a third vest as well). Paprika, Burgendy, Camel, Leaf Green, New Denim, Peacock, and Worn Denim. They are almost identical to the colors use din the original pattern, which is something that I almost never do, but I really like the way that they look sitting there all together.

An Introduction

Hi everyone -

My name is Susan (aka SpaceCase). I'm a fairly new knitter, and my current vest project is the first garment I will actually be able to wear.

OK, that's not entirely true - I've knit scarves, socks and a poncho, which technically I can wear. But those don't require seaming. Which? Scary.

Which is why I'm starting with a vest - no sleeves. Two less chances for me to make a sweater that looks like Frankenstein's monster took a knitting class. So a "no pressure" vest knitalong is perfect for this beginner knitter to get her vest done, and seek inspiration from more advanced knitters.

I'm about two inches away from finishing the back of Knitty's Boogie Vest, and will be starting on the front in the next day or two. As soon as I recharge my battery, I'll post a picture.

I've gotten through the first pattern repeat on the front of my Veste Everest. I was just thinking last night how nice it is that vests only have two (or something three) pieces to knit. Sometimes, after I get the body of a sweater done, they languish, in need of sleeves, for quite a while. I am actually hoping to get this one done this week, because the yarn for my second vest should be here Friday. I was looking at the booklet for Knitpicks new vest, and thinking about all the colors of yarn that I had to order for the North Island Vest, and I bet that I could use the remainder of the that yarn to make the Andean Treasure vest. I don't particularly like the style of that vest, so I was thinking of using the charted pattern from it on a pullover vest. I am in a rush to get these done before spring hits. Here in the high desert, we go from cold to hot in a very short period of time.

Hello!

I just place an Elann order for Veste Everest! I'm getting the Peruvian Sierra aran in Deep Forest.

I'm wondering about sizing though. I don't own any vests right now and it seems like the sizes are huge in the pattern. I'm a 38 bust and the best size for me looks like a 41.5 finished bust. However, it's supposed to be close fitting- it seems like a lot of ease doesn't it? I would usuaully choose a 40" for something close fitting. Or do vests run big to wear them over other shirts? I really don't want this to be huge and frumpy.

Thank you, Choomon, for setting this up! It's my first KAL. I don't know how to post pics but I see a variety of interesting buttons here.
I don't have anything on the needles as fancy as you guys, but I do have wishful thinking about many vests and am considering a felted one. I've done a couple design-as-you-go vests for babies and one for a big sister. I'll get back to figuring out how to post pictures soon.

Hi everybody! My plan is to make a self-designed vest using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Pumpkin. I've already got the yarn, so my next step is to knit a gauge sample. I want to run a cable pattern up the center, and am thinking of this one (from the Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns). For the rest of it, I haven't decided yet whether to do cables or a simple ribbing pattern; I'll try out both in my gauge sample. It's going to be knit in the round, using the formulas in Jacqueline Fee's The Sweater Workshop.

I was originally planning on making a sweater, but I was worried that with my other planned projects (Branching Out, legwarmers, a self-designed lace scarf, and the Union Square Poncho from Weekend Knitting) I wouldn't finish until winter was over. Doing a vest instead means I can actually envision wearing it before spring!

Good Stuff!

You guys are making me crave some Andean Treasure and I REALLY don't need any more yarn or projects on my plate right now....

Here's Hanks VIP. It's in Virtual Yarns Hebridean 3-ply - the color is Carrageen and is just about impossible to catch via camera, but it's gorgeous. This is the left front. Diamond will be next to button band, then horseshoe motif (Hank is a farrier - will figure out how to tie this on the back of the vest), moss stitch, wicker stitch and more moss stitch. Now on to the arm holes!

Here's is my VIP (Vest-in-progess). I knitted it on a knitting machine out of Andean Treasure. I wouldn't recommend using this yarn for knitting on a machine. I found several knots, but it knit up a beautifully soft fabric. I think it will look fabulous when I get in sewn together! I used The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns for the pattern. I am going to knit the Asymmetrical Vest from The Knit Stitch next. I have quite a few vests on my wish list, actually. They are a great thing to knit down here in Texas, where it doesn't get too cold.

What vest have you decided to work on? I am already through with most of the back of Veste Everest from IK winter 05. I'm kniting it in Knitpicks Andean Treasure in Granite. It's turing out really nice, and I love the way it looks.
Here's a photo of the start of it, I will post another when i get the back completed.
I am already considering a second vest to do. This one is Fair Isle, but also from an issue of IK.
